Safety Tips For Driving During Rains

Rainfall has already started in a few areas. As we all know the condition of Indian roads are not as good as other countries and some roads have deep water logging, potholes, without proper signage. The roads become very risky, specially for the two-wheeler riders, as the roads become very slippery after the first rain & there is a huge risk of the two-wheeled vehicles to skid. So we have to be more cautious while driving in the rainy season.

Request you to share the below information with all your team members, your families & stakeholders and make them feel how much we care !

  • Beware of the first rain- as the road becomes very slippery just after first rainfall.
  • Wet roads have lesser traction, resulting in skidding on sudden braking. Hence, drive smoothly at moderate speeds to avoid last minute panic braking or change in direction. The vehicle in front of you may also skid anytime, hence drive carefully while maintaining proper distance. Remember: Always Expect the Unexpected while driving!
  • Maintain at least 4 to 5 seconds of safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. Braking distances are severely affected on wet roads.
  • Always use windscreen wipers in rainy conditions and keep the windscreen clear & clean.
  • Never drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground through it; your car could be swept off the road.
  • Do not park vehicles on the road during rain. If it is necessary, then the vehicle may be parked on the left side with parking lights on.
  • Drive very carefully through the water-logged area. Do not take the chance of driving through the waterlogged areas if the pool of water is more than the height of the tyre. You may encounter with the unseen hazards like open manhole, muddy area or trench, undulation, or other objectionable objects etc.
  • If you have to drive through water logging area, then always follow tyre marking of the front vehicle, running ahead of you.
  • Always do frequent braking while driving so that brakes are ready for emergency stop. In water logging condition efficiency of braking decreases due to mud & water inside the brake.
  • Window fogging occurs due to a temperature difference between the inside surface of your glass and the outside. Switch on the AC, adjust the air flow of the air conditioner towards the windscreen and set the AC into fresh air mode to prevent the windscreen from fogging up.
  • If visibility is poor due to heavy rain or fog, then parking light or head light must be ON. Drive under controlled speed. Lower visibility requires higher concentration.
  • Concrete roads are the most slippery than any other types of roads. Bridges and flyovers can also be extra slippery, so drive carefully at lower and control speed over these areas.
  • Check fuel, Brake, Tyre, Steering, Horn condition, wiper (for car) before you start your journey.
  • Drive in the Lane. Do not drive vehicle in wrong side.
  • Look out for pedestrians, hand cart puller and cyclist etc on the road.
  • Use Google map to find out road blockage and road diversion due to heavy rain.
  • Use IS 4151 marked branded Crash Helmets preferably while riding two-wheeler with reflector strip (Use of chin strip while driving is mandatory).
